A small introduction

Our History

The school started with a desire to see little children from the age of 3, receive some educational stimulus that would encourage the development of their fine motor skills as well as develop mental capabilities. At the time, educational centres or day care centres in the community did not offer any kind of educational programme to children but instead served as places of rest where kids slept, ate and played under supervision.

This set up did not satisfy the founders of the school as it did not give children a good start for their education. As educators themselves and recipients of substandard education under apartheid, the founders understood all too well the importance of a strong foundation and recognised what would in essence, slow down or hinder the mental capabilities of the children in the community.

The school started as a pre-primary school with 11 children in 1999 at a small local church. The original 11 were between the ages of four and five years of age, and attended school as though it was a grown school. Soon, the community could see a difference between the pre-primary’s services and those offered by other day care and interest grew.

As the years went by, children’s number grew to a point where the church was too small and the school was forced to move to bigger grounds. By 2003, the number of learners had grown to the point where the last grade was grade 3.

At this point, pressure from the community had increased enough that the management team had to make a decision on whether to increase the number of classes per grade, or take a deep dive into primary grades and introduce a whole new phase. At the end, the community won and the intermediate classes were slowly introduced.

By 2012 the enrolment stood at 378 learners after 13 years of existence. These numbers encouraged the school as it showed the trust of our community. Our learners were not only from our community but also from surrounding villages about 25km away.

The increase in learners and classes meant that the school could introduce and participate in a number of activities to edify the learner’s schooling experience.

From our timid introduction to the Yvonne festival in 2005, to the steady growth of our participants in the Conquesta exam and Grahamstown Science Festival, our co and extra curriculum activities have drawn learners and also helped keep the school above par in terms of being a quality school for our stakeholders and also prove that we can compete with schools in the vicinity and beyond – that we are not merely a village school.

We believe the sky is never the limit,

and as we stand now having celebrated 20 years of existence last year, we know this now more than ever. From our hands on staff of 40, to the 986 learners with us every week, our goals are being realised. We aim high and strive to ensure we fly high!
